Systemic Foresight Expertise and Resilience Leadership for the public and private sectors

Mission

We provide resilience by combining foresight and imagination with materiality and culture. Our mission is to help public organisations, financial institutions, territorial entities and businesses

navigate the complexities of the future with confidence and anticipation and

identify new ways to create lasting value with planetary boundaries.

Those who adapt will thrive.

Manufacturing Corporate Resilience

Convinced that physical, domestic production and infrastructure are essential for economic resilience, we advise on robust strategies to ensure your industry and your investment can thrive amidst current constraints.

Foraging in History and Geography to Forge the Future

By learning from the past and from other places and cultures, we create innovative, adaptive and robust solutions for a tomorrow in a changed climate.

Anticipating Institutional and Managerial Change

Delivering effective policies amidst climate change, technological and geopolitical disruptions, demographic and behavioural shifts, and pandemics is hard. Contrary to perception, a hidden majority of business leaders want to contribute to improving wellbeing and the environment.

Through megatrends analysis, scenario planning and strategic foresight, we help leaders, managers and planners to challenge conventional governance, bridge the perception and knowledge gaps and become future-ready.

Imagining Futures within Planetary and Human Boundaries

Beyond mere optimisation of the existing, we envision alternative futures that are possible within the material situation we have.

The times of unlimited material possibilities are over. Repricing assets based on biophysical reality has begun. However, human imagination, intuition and ingenuity are unlimited. Those who decode these signals and transform will capture returns.

Rethinking Risk
 Radically

In a world where 50% of GDP are at risk from climate change, we help to preempt exposure and develop a risk culture that can act as a catalyst for innovation and regeneration.

What is the cost for your company of ignoring foresight?

Not preparing for the futures, or preparing for the wrong future comes at a cost. Investments are inherently based on anticipating future risks. Anticipatory mindset and advanced state of preparedness are therefore competitive advantages.

As shown in the figure below, if firms anticipate an ambitious carbon price in their NPV assessment and adjust their investment decisions from high to low-carbon activities, an earlier and cheaper energy transition can occur, promoting economic decarbonisation.

Foresight therefore acts as a bridge-builder for leaders which are hard-pressed between

  • their fiduciary duty to make profitable business for their shareholders,
  • the material risks of asset financial devaluation or physical destruction and of amplifying climate change through inadequate investment choices
  • the reality of a resource-constrained world
  • and the exposure to machine-dependency,
  • along with customers, regulators, suppliers and employees changing behaviours.

“Future prepared firms enjoy on average a 33% higher profitability and a 200% higher growth rate in market capitalisation than their less prepared peers.”

“While futures thinking should be leveraged across the organisation, firms that dedicate a seat on their executive team to foresight  – a Chief Foresight Officer – are sending a clear message about the priority they place on long-term value creation.”

Corporate foresight and its impact on firm performance,

René Rohrbeck & Menes Etingue Kum, 2018

Impact of firms’ climate foresight on economic decarbonisation.

The figure shows the change in euro area GHG emissions for selected years (as a % deviation from the 2020 level) as a result of firms’ anticipation of orderly carbon tax introduction.

What does successful foresight look like?

  • Foresight and planning for the future, are acts of optimism. Successful foresight is not one which terrifies: it is one which promotes action. Great futures work unravels your underlying assumptions and helps you change your mind.
  • Foresight generates strategies which are robust whatever the scenario that plays out.
  • Truth before tribe mindset, foresight is not afraid to face hard realities, dedicated to constructing middle ground solutions between professional practical experience and activism for immediate extreme measures. Bold ideas about future benefits create trust in thought leadership.
  • Foresight is more important now than ever because it can:
    • Challenge the way we see the world, our assumptions and certainties
    • Sow doubts, think the unthinkable,
    • Give a more complete understanding of the biophysical world and cultural and behavioural context
    • Distinguish hypes and noise from emerging trends and inflated expectations, from what the real major issues are.
    • Overcome divisions by imagining and enacting a common preferable future
    • Give realistic hope and raise from lethargy
